$5M Trail Fund Sweep Urgent Action Needed
- Jim
Urgent call for action! The current proposed NYS Budget contains a $1M annual sweep from our dedicated Trail Fund. Please read more about it at STATERAIDThis documemt also contains links to sample letters to Gov. Paterson, Senator Farley, and Assemblymen Amedore and Butler. You may wish to save this documemt for reference. This is a serious threat to the future of NY Snowmobiling so please write letters to the above officials. Generaly they support us in this matter but they need to hear from us to know that we are concerned.

Some Thoughts and Suggestions
- Ken
It looks like we are starting the Snowmobile Season all over again. There is talk of a measurable snow fall by the time we meet again Wednesday, at The Checkers Out Speedway on rte 30A just south of Johnstown. At this point the weather service is not going out on a limb. The trails could re-open or could remain closed, depending on snow fall depth. No one wants to demolish a new or old sled in a rush to plicate our investments in equipment. Everyone must be tolerant of the conditions so far and in the immediate future. The prospects are not very bright, unless we lived in Washington, D.C. They are within an inch of all time record snow fall for the area. The capitol District is 30 inches below normal (if there is such a thing), and they have had more than we have had. If and when the trail is re-opened, Safety and Courtesy should be the rule of the trails. Drive safely. Observe the laws that govern our sport, including speed, alcohol use, trail warning signs, stop signs at road crossings, and all the others that I have not mentioned. We as members should report any unsafe conditions on all of our trails. If there are obstructions that can be remedied by us it is our responsibility to do so or if possible put some kind of warning in place. I carry a roll of surveyors tape in my snowmobile suit just for that purpose. I had previously mentioned the threat by a land owner to close the portion of the trail if someone with a modified exhaust system wakes up his new born child. I have place signs "Loud Exhaust could cause this trail to be closed. In the area of the complaint. It is also a violation to modify factory installed exhaust systems. It is permitted in racing events. We must always be cognizant that there are others enjoying our trail system and common sense and courtesy should prevail. There have been a number of accidents on the Sacandaga in the past few weeks. One of the major problems has been trying to locate the injured operators, or the sled involved. The lake is big and unrelenting in hazards. Stumps, rocks, insufficient snow depth, ice fissures and cracks, associated with raising and lowering the water level. There is still open water in places. Extreme caution needs to be observed while sledding on lakes, but the Sacandaga is potentially the most dangerous. Hopefully we get some appreciable snow fall soon so we can return to the trails.
